This project began as a simple daily exercise to clear my mind and get warmed up for my normal studio work. It has, over the months, turned into something more than that. Our selfie culture is simultaneously an enthralling and nauseating phenomenon. At best, it's an expression of good times with good friends. Somewhere in between it expresses the search for identity we all experience. But in its darker reaches, it is an expression of an obsession - not of self - but of image of self - and this is really interesting - very often not of image of self but of mirror image of self. I'm tempted to write more, but I think these images tell their own stories.
These paintings were all done from selfies posted on the Sktchy app. They are people who both create art work and post their images as inspiration for others to work from. All are 10" x 10" - oil on linen or canvas. At some point, I envision this becoming a large grid-like piece for exhibition.
